HPV and Plantar Warts

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible for many kinds of conditions from simple warts to cancer. In plantar warts, the virus invades the sole of the feet by entering the body through tiny cracks or cuts in the skin and causing circular warts with the appearance of callused skin to form. Plantar warts can grow individually, or cluster in what is called a mosaic. Each wart usually has a tiny black dot in the center, which is actually dried blood in the minuscule capillary that feeds the wart with blood. Plantar warts can be very painful due to pressure placed on them during walking and running and can multiply or get larger without treatment. Because plantar warts are very hearty and home treatments are often ineffective or risky (especially for people with diabetes or neuropathy), professional treatment from a podiatrist is suggested.

Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact Jeffrey L. Bober, DPM from Maryland. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.

What Causes Fallen Arches?

It is not uncommon for adults to experience a sudden onset of flat feet, known medically as posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD). The tibial tendon, which connects the calf muscles with bones on the inside of the foot, holds up the arch and supports the foot when you walk. This tendon can tear from playing sports like basketball, tennis or soccer, or become inflamed, causing the arch to fall. This injury is more common in women and adults over the age of 40. Other risk factors include obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. Most fallen arches can be treated non-surgically with orthotics, shoes with good arch support, and braces. Sometimes a protective boot is worn to give the tendon a chance to heal properly. Treating PTTD early is highly recommended, as putting it off can lead to further complications, such as arthritis, that may impede your ability to walk, run, or take part in other physical activities. If you have noticed a sudden onset of flat feet, it is wise to make an appointment with a podiatrist as soon as possible for a full diagnosis and suggested treatment options.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Jeffrey L. Bober, DPM from Maryland. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Pain in the top of the foot can be caused from a variety of conditions, one of them being extensor tendinitis. Tendons are fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bone. Extensor tendons are located on the top of the feet. They connect bones in the toes to muscles on the front portion of the leg which work together to help raise your toes and flex your feet. These tendons can become inflamed and irritated from wearing tight, small, or non-supportive shoes, or from overuse. This condition, known as extensor tendonitis, can cause pain and swelling in the top of the feet that may worsen after activity. If you are experiencing this type of foot pain, it is a good idea to contact a podiatrist. After the examination, if it’s determined that you have extensor tendonitis, your doctor may prescribe a course of treatment that includes rest, anti-inflammatory medication, splinting, physical therapy, or even steroid injections.

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Bone Spurs
  • Corns
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Ingrown Toenails
  • Arthritis (such as Gout, Rheumatoid, and Osteoarthritis)
  • Flat Feet
  • Injury (from stress fractures, broken toe, foot, ankle, Achilles tendon ruptures, and sprains)
  • And more

Diagnosis

To figure out the cause of foot pain, podiatrists utilize several different methods. This can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

What Could Be Causing Your Heel Pain?

Heel pain can occur at any age, and it can come from a variety of causes. Plantar fasciitis is the most common source of heel pain. It occurs when the band of tissues that connects the heel to the toes, known as the plantar fascia, becomes inflamed. This condition can then cause the plantar fascia to pull on the heel and give it stress. It can also lead to heel spurs, which are calcium deposits that form on the bottom of the heel bone and become painful when bearing weight. Fat pad atrophy is another common source of heel pain. It occurs when the fat underneath the heel begins to wear away. Growing children who are active between the ages of 8 and 13 are susceptible to Sever’s disease. This is a result of the calf muscles growing faster than the Achilles tendon and causing the muscles to pull on the heel. Because of how debilitating heel pain can be to everyday life, patients who are struggling with any of these conditions may wish to consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Jeffrey L. Bober, DPM of Maryland. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
